Five Principles of Green Home Design

A green home minimizes the negative impact on its environment through its home design. Here are a few considerations an architect takes into account when designing a green home:

1. Site: Evaluations and analysis of access, slope, ledge, soil, bodies of water, and vegetation in order to limit the home's impact on the site environment. This includes the site location (farmland, wetland, protected species habitats) and proximity to public transportation, parks, schools, and stores.

2. Size: A green home is efficiently designed to keep the square footage to a minimum. This reduces the amount of energy to heat and cool the home, lighting, and the quantity of building materials used, and also controls costs and reduces site impact.

3. Solar: Whether or not there is a plan to install a solar energy system to heat the water or produce electricity, there are several other solar considerations in green home design. Designing the home for passive solar makes the most of solar energy by harvesting it into the homes' natural energy flows. Passive solar systems include day-lighting strategies, heating and cooling control techniques, and natural ventilation. When a whole-building approach is taken, energy savings can be great both in terms of reducing the home's carbon footprint and the costs associated with heating, cooling, and maintaining the home.

4. Energy: Lighting, heating, and cooling systems are an important consideration in green home design. Renewable energy systems such as solar, wind, and geothermal systems use the earth's natural energy to heat and cool the home, as well as provide electricity to run appliances and technology..

5. Water Conservation: Building a new home presents a unique opportunity to save water. Two money and energy-saving strategies which can be easily incorporated into an energy efficient home design are 1) reducing the overall water using in the home by specifying low-flow water fixtures, low-flush or composting toilets, installing aerators on all taps, and installing low-flow showerhead nozzles; and 2) specifying a plumbing system that reuses grey water (wastewater from domestic usage such as dish washing, laundry and bathing) for flushing toilets, watering lawns, etc. (note: some grey water systems require approval by most local building jurisdictions, your architect will verify this prior to design).

Of course, a new home should use minimal amounts of fossil fuels, last a long time, and cost less money. Many home design strategies don't cost a dime in materials but can save hundreds of dollars on heating and cooling costs. The result is a beautiful, healthy home - for both the homeowners and the environment.

Build Deck Stairs in 3 Easy Steps With Adjustable Stair Brackets Vs Traditional Stair Construction

Adjustable brackets have many advantages compared to conventional stair building. With adjustable stair brackets, you can custom fit deck stairs into an exact area, forming any rise or run required. Traditional stair building is rigid and not forgiving. If you miscalculate or need to make some adjustments, then you have to throw out your materials and start all over again.

The adjustable bracket method also differs from conventional stair construction with its ease of installation. The automatic adjustable system only needs 3 saw cuts per stringer and you can make your deck stairs up to 7 feet wide. Only 2 stringers are necessary. No center stringers are needed at all because riser acts as a load-bearing joist, spanning across the stair between the two stringers, giving you stronger stairs. Literally, in 3 steps you can build deck stairs. With the traditional method you must custom cut, align and support several stringers as needed for the stair width. This requires a high degree of skill.

There's a lot less waste of wood too. With traditional stringers you cut away half the strength when forming the stair. Also, you don't have the frustration with math and all the mistakes that come from mathematical error with the new building method. In most cases, a simple adjustment will eliminate the error. This will save you a lot of time.

Adjustable brackets not only adjust, but are also approved as 'joist hangers'. This allows you to attach 2" thick risers that span across the stair like floor joists, every 10" or 11" between the two stringers. This eliminates the need for several center stringers running down the stair as in conventional construction. Since there are only two stringers, you also eliminate the need to align and attach several cut stringers in order to build your stair.

Another benefit to using brackets is that they provide 'code compliant' rail post support. According to the accredited testing, the brackets are used to provide rail post support for any type of wood stair which meets the code requirement for 200lb. Lateral load at 42". Conventional stair building doesn't have a good solution for this rail post attachment problem. If a big person presses on the railing in traditional stair framing, it can easily give way.

In addition to deck stairs, the brackets can be used for interior stairs: basement stairs, tongue and groove stairs, and even concrete formwork.

This is how it works:
Step one: Set the brackets on the two 2x6 stringer members using the spacers and pivot screws.

Step two: Remove spacers and rotate brackets to adjust stair height.

Step 3:Fix brackets in position, attach risers and treads.

Before you begin, determine the exact number of steps you need and exactly how wide you would like your steps to span.

In summary, 8 reasons why adjustable brackets are superior to traditional stair building:
1- Allows for a custom fit.
2- Ease of installation: 2 stringers, 3 saw cuts each
3- Less waste of materials.
4- No math skills required.
5- Simple adjustments correct errors.
6- Approved as joist hangers.
7- They provide 'code compliant' rail post support.
8. Big time savings in comparison.

Ceramic Tile Over Linoleum

Ceramic tile installation over many materials will work just fine. But will ceramic tile over linoleum work? That's a good question and the answer is ... it depends!

Probably the most important step in a successful tile installation project is preparing the backing - the surface over which the tile will be installed. Save time and money by properly preparing the backing so that's it's solid and of the right material. Backings must be flat, solid, smooth and clean. Install tile over a springy surface and you'll have a failure. Any movement will produce cracking of the grout and maybe even cracked tiles.

You can install tile over many surfaces including linoleum or vinyl. Tile is also installed often over old tile, plywood, brick, wall board and cement board. As long as the surface is flat, solid, smooth and clean you can use it as a backer. Now the surface may require proper preparation and the proper adhesive. Your tile supplier can help with these decisions.

Ceramic tile over vinyl works if the backing is smooth, clean and tightly in place. Any movement of the flooring will likely crack the grout. Certain types of vinyl flooring are cushioned so that they will flex. These floors will not work because of the movement. A cushioned floor should be covered with plywood or cement board. You could also remove the flooring and eliminate that layer.

Be careful when removing old resilient flooring. Until 1986, many floors contained asbestos, which is a health hazard if fibers are released into the air. The only way to know whether this flooring contains asbestos is to have it tested. The best way is to just assume older floors contain asbestos. Don't sand the floor. Usually the best approach is to tile over the floor. If the floor is loose, just cover it with exterior plywood.

Installing ceramic tile over linoleum will work great with the proper preparation and adhesives. Once you have the right base, installation is just like any other base. It's often the best way to cover older resilient floors.

Dryer Vents - Reduce Fire Danger

The dryer vent pipe is an often overlooked fire hazard and energy eater. Moisture and lint can gather in the folds causing a potential fire hazard and restricting air flow making your dryer run longer consuming more natural gas and electricity. I see over 200 houses every year and one of the most common and potentially dangerous problems are incorrect dryer vents.

You need to replace your dryer vent pipe if it

  • is made of flexible plastic or foil
  • has more than two 90 degree elbows
  • is more than 12 feetlong
  • uses metal screws
  • the laundry area is moist, humid and covered in lint

Flexible foil or plastic vent pipe looks like the arms on the robot from the TV show Lost In Space. People use these because they are so easy to install. Every turn or elbow will slow the exhaust air. Longer lengths will cause moisture in the air to condense giving lint a chance to catch and build up in the pipe. The longer length will also make your dryer work harder. The sharp point of metal screws in the pipe will catch lint. If there are leaks in the pipe the added humidity will provide a perfect environment for mold and mildew growth and Carbon Monoxide will also be pumped into your house if you have a gas dryer. Asthma and allergy sufferers should pay special attention to the dryer vent pipe.

A proper dryer vent will

  • be made of solid metal pipe
  • not have more than two 90 degree elbows
  • not be more than 12 feet long (check local building codes at your city building inspection department)
  • use metal tape to seal and secure all joints

All the supplies and tools can be bought at the local hardware store. Aluminum pipe is much easier to work with. It comes flat for cutting and then is rolled so one edge can be inserted into the other crimped edge. Pre-made elbows are used. The pipe and elbows both have one end crimped so you can fit the smaller crimped end into the larger non-crimped end.

The metal tape has a backing that peels off and sticks to the pipe holding it securely. You will need to buy tin snips or aviation side-cutters (this type looks like it has a 45 degree bend and will keep your hands above the material) and a crimping tool to reduce the diameter of cut edges. Remember to fit the small end of the pipe into the large end so the edges do not block air flow and catch lint inside the pipe!

I once saw a condominium with a vent pipe that was over 30 feet in length. You may have to move the dryer across the basement near an outside wall which would mean the gas and electric supplies will have to be altered by a licensed contractor. Homes with first or second floor laundries may need special attention. And never exhaust the dryer into a garage or attic!

Frank Kalinski is a licensed builder in the State of Michigan and has run a gutter repair service for five years. Now doing home residential rental inspection for property owners he has seen many homes and how people live in them. He sees many products and designs years after construction; some things work well and some not. Simple, basic, tried and true generally last the longest and are most economical. Home Safety - Is Your Home Safe? Take This Simple Quiz

Home Safety is easy to overlook. Is your home safe? I'll bet you've never looked at home safety through the eyes of an insurance adjuster. But it will benefit you to think about all of the ways you could have an insured loss at your home.

Here's a simple quiz. If you have done all of the tips after the question, you can answer "Yes!" If not, you've got some work to do.

1. Is your home secure?

-Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors.

-Install outdoor lights next to all exterior doors, and make sure the bulbs are working. Connect the outdoor lights at doors to motion detectors that go off when someone approaches.

-Install a monitored security system that has sensors at every opening, including second story windows.

-Install curtains or blinds on windows so people outside cannot easily see what's inside.

2. Is your home safe?

-Install one smoke detector on each level of the home.

-Install a radon gas detector in the basement.

-Keep the areas in front of doors, and sidewalks cleared of leaves and snow.

-Make sure there is a fence around any outdoor pool.

-Place a home fire extinguisher in the kitchen, one in the garage, and one in another room.

-Clean out the lint filter on your dryer every time you use it.

-Get your fireplace chimney cleaned once a year.

-Get your furnace checked once a year.

3. Are you living safely?

-When you have guests in your home, monitor their alcohol consumption, and don't allow them to drive if they've had too much to drink.

-Be extremely careful when working outside on ladders. A fall can seriously injure or kill you.

-Insist that any workers on your property provide you with their certificate of insurance. No exceptions.

-Be extremely careful when working inside. Use a safe small ladder or solid stool, don't jump up on a chair to reach overhead.

-Keep your staircases clear. Don't stack stuff on stairs and then try walking around it.

-Don't start to cook on the stove and then walk away. Cooking fires are number one for home damage.

-Don't plug a bunch of electrical devices into a cheap extension cord.

-Don't cover extension cords with rugs or run them under carpet.

If you were able to answer "Yes" on all three questions....CONGRATULATIONS! You will likely never have to have an insurance adjuster visiting your home!

If you have experienced a property loss, whether fire, wind, flood or other, you need to know winning insurance claim strategies. The insurance company will not tell you the claims process, but I will. I will show you how to take control of your insurance claim, and add hundreds or even thousands more dollars to your claim settlement. For more information, go to the website listed below.

11 Tips For Hiring Landscape Contractors

This article will list the biggest mistakes homeowners make when hiring a landscape contractor and also show you how to avoid them.

These useful FREE landscaping tips can help homeowner avoid costly mistakes and will save money when hiring a landscape contractor.

Here are 11 costly pitfalls and how you can identify them, and more importantly, avoid them:

  1. Hire only licensed landscape contractors. Look for the following license:
    • Landscape Contractors (C-27)
    • Swimming Pool Contractor (C-53)
    • General Building Contractor (B)
  2. Check the contractor's license number by calling the Contractors State License Board (800) 321-2752 or and California Landscape Contractors Association to make sure their license and liability insurance are current. Also check out their website if they have one.
  3. Get at least three references from your prospect contractor and review past work and visit several sites if possible.
  4. Get at least three bids. You can do this on your own by going on-line to research contractors in your area or use our recommended contractors. (If you hired a landscape designer , you should already have a set of landscape concept design plan for biding).
  5. Get a written contract from the contractor and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms. Ask questions if something is not clear.
  6. Pay 10% down or $1,000, whichever is less. This is an industry standard for a contract.
  7. Keep all records of payments to avoid any issues with respect to payments.
  8. Don't pay cash as cash payments have a way of disappearing from the books.
  9. Don't make final payment until you are satisfied with the job because it will be very hard to get the contractor to come back and fix something once they have gotten paid.
  10. Keep all documents and papers relating to your project, including any project changes and amendments. Just remember, if it is not in writing then it does not exist.
  11. When in doubt, hire only a licensed professional contractor who is current with landscape industry. A professional landscape contractor's primarily focus should be a client's interest first and foremost.

Do your homework before making any decisions. Not all the contractors have the same specialty and skills. Your desired style should match the contractor's ability/skills to get the most benefit.

A "What to Do" Guide in Case of Insect Bites

We humans are not the only ones who love to spend our summertime in nature - Insects like it also. So in order to have a great time in nature on a beautiful summer day, we need to be very careful, because we can be easily bitten or stung by various insects.

If you are bitten by insects you will know in very short time because of the immediate effects that can occur on your body, such as pain, itching, scratching, swelling or a local redness. They can be the most annoying symptoms that can disturb your peace and quiet. All these symptoms are caused by the actual venom or a toxic chemical substance produced by the insect's body. The venom or the toxin will attack your body, by producing allergic reactions immediately after it is injected in your body.

The reactions that you will have are based generally upon how sensitive you are to the insect bites and to the venom or toxin. The general reaction to insect bites are mild - like local stinging or itching sensations, and a little bit of swelling that usually disappears in a couple of days. Sometimes, these are not the singular reactions, and if you are a sensitive or an allergic person you can have reactions such as swollen glands, painful joints and hives or even high fever. If you encounter these kinds of symptoms you must immediately contact a dermatologist or your family doctor in the shortest time possible, or if your medical situation aggravates you must call 911.

The most severe reactions to the insect's bites venom or toxin are called anaphylaxis reactions. These reactions are similar to the allergic ones, and appear only on the most sensitive humans. The actual symptoms vary from toxic shock and swelling faces to even breathing difficulties and lung collapse. Also it is very important to know that these symptoms are caused by only a few dangerous animals and spiders such as venomous or toxic spiders, bees, wasps, hornets and yellow jackets.

First Aid in case of Insect Bites and Stings

If you are in an open space (outside your house) such as in the woods or lawns, it will be very wise to go inside, because in the wilderness you are highly exposed to other bites and stings from the other insects.

A straight razor, a knife or even a plastic credit card can become handy if you get an insect sting. You will use this so called "tools" in order to gently scrape off the stinger. Do not try to pull the stinger, because it can most certainly have some venom or toxin to eject. Be careful.

If you are concerned about the local inflammation, you can surely use some ice packs.

If you have a tick, you must gently remove the painful and dangerous tick with a pair of tweezers. Applying adhesive tape on the tick can also do the trick. If the wound remains in your skin a long period of time, you must seek specialized medical attention.

If the wound is very itchy, fell free to use some prescribed over the counter medication. Medicines such as Benadryl, Tylenol Severe Allergy or even Chlorpheniramine Maleate will most certainly do the job.

In case of severe skin irritation you can use a hydrocortisone-based topical ointment cream or lotion, such as the Calamine Lotion, and you will probably have a healthy skin after that.

Call 911 for an ambulance if you experience the following symptoms: hives, dizziness, fainting, breathing problems or even muscle and joint pains, chills, cramps or coma. It the meantime you can take some proper medication, advised by specialized doctors. Take with you the medication you have used, in order for the specialized medics to know what was done so far.

Try to loosen the injured person's clothes if they are wearing any tight ones. It is advised not to give to the injured person any liquids to drink. In case of any respiratory problems, use CPR.

How to Shingle Your House

If you want to know how to shingle, you've come to the right place. But first... a Bear Story.

It was easy to see how "The Bear" got his nickname. He was a big burly guy, covered with thick brown hair. Back when I started roofing in Cape Coral, Florida, The Bear was well known as the fastest shingler in town. He didn't tear off or run metal... all he did was shingle. Typically he would shingle an entire house by himself in one day.

I wasn't very fast back then. Occasionally my boss wondered out loud why I couldn't learn how to shingle like The Bear. At that point I didn't know how he was so fast, but one day I found out...

My Boss had hired The Bear to shingle a house and asked me to stop by to deliver some supplies. I was pretty excited to see what I could learn.

As I pulled up to the job, I could hear him shingling on the back side of the house. His roofing nailer sounded like a machine gun. I climbed the ladder and quickly discovered The Bear's Secret:

He was installing the nails way above the nail line. The nails don't go through as many shingle layers up there, so they go in fast and you never have to stop and fix a shiner.

Back then, few people paid much attention to where the nails went. But then Hurricane Andrew tore up South Florida, with billions of dollars in damages. Lawsuits flew in the aftermath and a bunch of roofing inspectors lost their jobs.

Turns out that shingles aren't very wind resistant when they're nailed in the wrong place. After that, the entire state started to sweat the details.

That's also about the time I lost track of The Bear. Perhaps he had a hard time adjusting to doing things right. Old habits die hard, you know.

Occasionally, I still come across a speed demon like The Bear. They're lightning fast alright, but I have no use for them. Speed alone is not enough.

As you're learning how to shingle, focus on getting the details right... such as proper nail placement. Speed will come in due time.

Of course there's a lot more involved in learning how to shingle. To make the job easier and help you avoid big mistakes, go to: http://www.roofingsecrets.com

The Choices of Cellular Shade Blinds

Choosing a window covering can take a lot of thought, mainly because there are so many things to think about before a final decision is arrived at. One of the most popular choices of recent years is that of cellular shade blinds, which have the advantage of offering many of the advantages of other window coverings, but all rolled into one.

There are essentially two types of shade in this category, and that is the honeycomb variety and the room darkening shade variety. Which one should be chosen depends very much on the type of effect that is desired, and how much insulation one expects, such as that to be had from a decent set of curtains.

If you are looking for a shade that simply makes the place a more relaxing place to be, then honeycomb cellular shades could well be a good choice, since they provide excellent shading qualities and yet do not make the room totally dark, or at least so dark that the room looks gloomy. They also give total privacy, which is important for many people.

However, depending on the type of house you live in, keeping warm may also be a consideration. In this instance the choice of cellular room darkening blinds may be a more apt choice. These styles of shades will not only provide more room darkening ability but will also provide a great level of insulation, and that's something that many people would welcome.

These are the two basic choices in the cellular shade style, and to know them makes the job that much easier when it comes to choosing the type of window blinds that are right for you.

Carl Formby owns and operates http://www.bamboopatioblinds.com, a site dedicated to information about window blinds and especially Cordless Cellular Blinds.

Ways To Make Your Kitchen More Energy Efficient And Save Money

a) Kitchen Appliances
Install energy efficient labelled kitchen appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, and clothes washers). Every kitchen appliance has two price tags a purchase price and the operating cost. Energy efficient models will save you money and use less energy.

b) Lighting
- Install energy efficient labelled lighting (e.g., light fixtures: suspended lights, ceiling-mounted lights, cabinet lights, recessed lights, and compact fluorescent bulbs).

c) Refrigerator
- In most households, the refrigerator is the single biggest energy consuming kitchen appliance. Energy efficient refrigerator models use high efficiency compressors, improved insulation, and more precise temperature and defrost mechanisms to improve energy efficiency. Energy efficient refrigerators provide energy savings without sacrificing the features you want.

- Keep your refrigerator and freezer filled for most economical operation. Less cold air is lost when the door is opened in a filled refrigerator because the food helps retain the cold.

- Allow foods to partially cool before placing them in the refrigerator. It takes more energy to cool hot food. For added savings, cover foods and liquids. The moisture that is released by uncovered containers increases energy use during the refrigerator's defrost cycle.

- Select a refrigerator with a freezer on top. A side-by side unit uses up to 20 percent more energy. The Energy Guide label will help you choose the most efficient model.

d) Oven
- Don't open the oven door to take a peek at what's cooking inside. Instead, turn on the oven light and check the cooking status through the oven window. Opening the oven door lowers the temperature inside - by as much as 25 degrees - which increases cooking time and wastes energy.

-As long as your oven is on, cook several items at the same time. Just make sure you leave enough room for the heat to circulate around each item.

- In an electric oven, you can turn the heat off several minutes before your food is fully cooked. As long as the oven door remains closed, enough heat will be stored inside to finish cooking your meal.

e) Dishwasher
- Let your dishes air dry. A dishwasher uses more energy to dry dishes than to wash them. If your dishwasher doesn't have an automatic air-dry switch, turn off the control knob after the final rinse and prop the door open to let moisture escape.

- When purchasing a dishwasher, look for energy saving features such as a short wash cycle. Shorter washing cycles, with fewer rinses, save water and water-heating energy.

- Use your dishwasher only for full loads. Be sure your dishwasher is full, but not overloaded when you turn it on. Improper loading can result in poorly cleaned dishes that need to be rewashed.

- Install your dishwasher away from your refrigerator. The dishwasher's heat and moisture make the refrigerator work harder. Keep your refrigerator away from other heat sources such as direct sunlight.

f) Kitchen Walls, Windows and Doors
- If your remodelling plans include opening walls you could improve your comfort and the energy efficiency of your home by adding insulation and air sealing. If you are replacing the windows, doors, and skylights, install those with the energy efficient label to make your kitchen the most energy efficient on the block.

Developing Wealth Building Habits

If you want to be successful, you need mentors or in other words find people that have succeeded. These people can include the ultra rich like Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, but don't forget about the people around you that have created good wealth building habits.

Some of the people have great advice and will need to be listened to very intently, while others need to be put on a list and never spoken to again. If you're going to be developing wealth building habits, you're going to need some advice from wealthy people. Let me make myself clear, when I'm talking about developing wealth building habits, I'm not talking about spiritual, knowledge, Biblical or religious wealth. I'm talking about making money, as much money as you desire or feel you need.

Wealth building habits start with you. Ask yourself this question "how bad do I want or desire wealth?" Really, really, really bad or are you the kind of person that would like to be rich, but that's as far as it goes. Developing any of these habits does not include sleeping in until 11 o'clock in the morning and then complaining the rest of the day about your finances.

Bill Gates used to work 16 hours a day. How many days a week did he do that? These are the questions you're going to find the answers to. If you're interested in making $50 million, you need to find someone who can teach you, how to make $50 million.

It won't be necessary to contact Warren Buffett but I would advise you to gather as much information about him as possible. Wealth building habits start with learning about wealthy people. If they get up at four o'clock in the morning and read the newspaper until six o'clock, then exercise for 30 minutes and start working at seven o'clock, you need to start doing this also. Developing good wealth building habits over time are what most successful businessman and women have been doing for years. Study their habits and start changing yours.

If you do something every day, it will usually become a habit within 30 days.

Professional Advice on Home Building

If you're a do it yourself or or a homeowner who every once in a while, once to tackle a small or large project but doesn't know where to begin, can gather useful information from home building books. I have been using these books for years and may have been worth their weight in gold.

I started my career working for my father and my father worked for his father as a Carpenter. Our job was to frame the house and we built a Lotta homes. I learned how to frame and developed some great carpentry skills from my father and working with other skilled carpenters. Over the years, if you're paying attention, even a monkey can figure out, how to assemble almost anything.

The only problem that I faced, was learning how to build the rest of the home. I would often ask questions to other building trades like plumbers, electricians, roofers and construction superintendents. Some of these people were helpful and others were not. When I was in my early 30s, I purchased my first book on home building. This book lead to other books and soon I found myself with more home building knowledge that my father.

I had about 50 books on home building and soon found myself doing large home remodels, with no formal education. I would attribute almost everything that I learned outside of house framing to books. These books have proven invaluable to me over the years and with a relatively small investment. I couldn't have spent over $200 purchasing these books but have used the knowledge from them to save myself thousands of dollars.

One $20 home building books or home repairs, can save you lots of money, if you're willing to do a little research and the labor to complete almost any home building project.

By the way, if you're interested in learning how to repair a roof, build your own house, interior decorating, structural engineering, building a deck, gathering some more information about home painting or even remodeling your bathroom. An online home building bookstore can save you money if you're willing to do the work.

Greg Vanden Berge is working on the internet to promote the education for creating simple to follow guides and home building books to help professional building contractors as well as the weekend warriors. He has just finished a Home Buyers Guide to take some of the frustration out of home shopping.

Cost Effective Stair Building

What is the most cost effective way of building stairs? Why do the tract homes use on site methods of construction? When you think of a factory assembling a product on a assembly line you think why not a home. Why do they still build homes on lots or residential home sites?

If homes could be built in a factory cheaper than on site that is exactly what every home builder would be doing. They just haven't quite figured it out yet. When dealing with the large amounts of materials required to build a house and of course the expense of shipping. It is not cost effective to build a conventional home in a factory and ship it over long distances.

This is the biggest problem with cost effective stair construction. Most prefabricated stairs you will notice are spiral stairs. These stairs are smaller than most stairs that are used for multi level construction.

Spiral stairs are hard for your average carpenter to build. These stairs can be purchased from a factory easily and quite inexpensive.

The stairs in your average two story house are going to weigh about 3 times the amount of a spiral set of stairs that could be shipped in a cost effective way. Spiral stairs are not going to be the main stairway in a home and normally go up to a loft or an attic. Most spiral stairs don't meet the minimum building requirements for the main stairway in your home.

When building tract homes the lumber is shipped in bulk directly to the house site where it will be assembled. The lumber and other building materials will be shipped once. If it went to a factory and then assembled it would also have to be sent to the site on which the house was to be built. This added expense in shipping the materials twice is the problem for such a large and heavy item such as a set of stairs.

There are other prefabricated types of stairs that are built locally and the shipping usually is not a major expense. If you are building a stairway that is not to difficult to build for the average carpenter it will normally be cost effective to build the stairs on site. This would require having the carpenter build the stairs as part of the rough framing and then after drywall have the finish carpenter build the stair handrail system.

Choosing Bathroom Mirrors

The mirror is one of the most commonly seen objects in any household. It is made for different purposes and styles that suit everyone's needs. Mirrors can be used for aesthetic or for more practical reasons. All people use the mirror for their different needs.

Some people prefer large whole body mirrors that are very useful for dressing up as it can show any flaw there may be on the outfit. Some people, on the other hand, prefer small and cute mirrors that can easily placed anywhere.

But the most important and the most common type of mirror found in any home is the bathroom mirror. They can either be stylish or classic in design but most importantly they are used for sanitation purposes. Nobody want to be cut while shaving so, they usually use mirrors to make sure that there are no nicks in their faces. Also, some people like to fix themselves while inside the bathroom and they need to make sure that they are doing it right by using mirrors.

In choosing bathroom mirrors you must take into consideration many different things. First of all is the size. Do you wish to have a large mirror inside the bathroom or do you need small practical mirrors? In choosing the size, you must look around your bathroom. Is it spacious or just right? Make sure you don't choose a large mirror if you have a medium or small bathrooms. Just the same, never choose overly small mirrors for large and spacious bathrooms because the effect will be extremely unpleasing to the eye.

Another thing that you must consider is the style of the mirror. DO you want a contemporary or a country themed bathroom mirror? The basic consideration in this matter is the over-all theme of your bathroom. If you have contemporary themed bathrooms, choose contemporary pieces. Choosing a country theme mirror for a contemporary designed bathroom will destroy it's over all appearance. Use common sense. If you think that the effect of the mirror is not good, take it off. Rely on your instinct.

Shape is another consideration. It is very important to take into mind that the shape of the mirror should follow the whole theme. If the objects inside your bathroom are takes round shapes, buy a mirror with a round shape as well. They must complement with one another.

Another important thing is the color of the mirror. In contemporary style, bathroom mirrors usually are in the color of black or with a touch of black. Choosing the right color also helps in brightening up the look in your bathroom. Make the mirror a serious decorative accent to your design rather than a liability. Once again use your instincts to distinguish bad taste from good.

Finally, if you don't want to gamble on what your bathroom would look like, get the help of a professional interior designer. They will not make any mistake, trust me.

Our bathroom is our personal sanctuary. Make the bathroom mirror as beautiful as possible.

Hiring a Contractor For Bathroom Remodeling - Remodeling Contractors

Well here's the age old question, how do we go about finding a decent bathroom remodeling contractor.

Here's some things you will be looking for in a contractor.

1. Is Your Contractor Fair and Honest?

2. Does Your Contractor Have Experience Remodeling and Designing Bathrooms?

3. Can You Actually Find a Contractor Who Will Complete the Job in a Timely Manner?

4. Do You Think the Workers Will Be Able to Clean the Job up Daily?

5. Will the Contractor Show up on Time?

6. Is the Contractor Going to Work At Least Eight Hours a Day?

7. Does the Contractor's Crew Have Experience?

8. Is Your Contractor and His Crew Courteous?

If you find a contractor for your bathroom remodeling project that has answered yes to all questions above, hire that person immediately. Most contractors can sincerely answer yes to half of the questions above. If you're looking for the ultimate bathroom remodeling contractor, you could be searching for quite a while, you're looking for some one that is competent and you feel comfortable with.

When hiring a contractor, look for someone who has your interest in mind first and not theirs. Find someone who is willing to help with the designed process of your bathroom and the remodeling. If you find a contractor to be arrogant or controlling, there is a good chance, your bathroom might not turn out the way you envision it.

When hiring a contractor for your bathroom remodeling project or any home improvement project, the most important thing to keep in mind is, whether or not you feel comfortable with this person or not. Never hire a contractor you're not comfortable with.

If a contractor is referred to you by someone you trust, this does not guarantee you will be happy with the bathroom remodel. Most referrals that I have gotten over the years are like rolling the dice, I believe I would have done just as good picking a name out of a hat.

What Does it Take to Find a Soulmate?

With a flurry of dating websites out there on the internet are people really finding their soul mate? What does it take to know that a person is the THE one? Sometimes there is a lot of physical chemistry that keeps the relationship going. Sometimes when a relationship is comfortable people are reluctant to get out of it even though all the fireworks might have long gone out of the equation.

So, what do we do when we search for a soul-mate? Most of us compare the prospect we meet to someone we know growing up admiring or not really liking. We all have a script in our mind that kicks-in when looking for a soul-mate. Most of us do not get the chance to meet a whole range of personalities when we are growing up. Some are really lucky enough to be a part of a huge family where people are always interfering "in a good sort of way" in each other's lives. So individuals from such families get plenty of chances to interact with uncles, aunts, first cousins, second cousins and many more personalities in the family. But for the most of us, our cherished blessings are limited, our beloved families filled with multiple issues affect us in varying degrees and our life events that we are forced to play a part of as a child gets recorded in the mental script that we use to look for our soul-mate.

Many astrology websites offer horoscope matching to find out if two people are compatible. For those of you who wonder what a horoscope is, it is basically a mathematical chart that we cast based on your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth (this gives the latitude and longitude needed for our calculations). Does horoscope matching really lead you to your soul-mate? No one can guarantee the results, but it is a method that is used hugely in the East to find out if two individuals are right for each other.

Relationships are unpredictable. We are influenced by so many events and people both in the present and from the past. Life is always changing. But fundamental principle is that all zodiac signs have the power to believe in life, love, in second chances and miracles. As long as this thing called BELIEF is around, the chances are that you WILL find your soul-mate. BELIEVE!

Peace and Love.

How to Repair Your Dishwasher

Your dishwasher isnt measuring up to the price you paid for it. The dishwasher might not even turn on, the dishes arent getting clean, or the machine wont even drain. What do you do? Instead of calling the repairman, you can save a bundle and try servicing it yourself. Open up the kick panel in back and get to work, carefully following these dishwasher repair tips:

1) If your dishwasher doesnt seem to be working at all, first check the plug and the circuit breaker. If these are working, check the door switch, timer, and selector switch. If any of these three items are broken, replace them. If all of these check out, the problem is internal and the wiring must be replaced. Call a technician.

2) If the dishes arent getting clean, there might not be enough water coming into the machine. There might even be no water at all. Check the water shut-off valve under the kitchen sink to make sure its on. Otherwise, the machine might have a faulty internal water valve and will need professional service. Before you call to get the internal water valve serviced, however, try checking the spray arms for clogs, and unclogging them by hand if necessary. Once youve done this, see if the water is hot enough. Cool or cold water wont clean dishes. Be sure the water temperature is at least 120. If your dishes still wont get clean, try adding soap to both soap cups. Furthermore, if there is a smoky film on your dishes, it means your water is hard. You will need to clean your dishwasher with a dishwasher cleaner. Use one that is specially formulated by your dishwashers manufacturer, or use a quality cleaner such as Washer Magic, Dishwasher Magic, Glisten (which also acts as a deodorizer and can be used in any porcelain-lined machine or tub), or Glass Magic.

3) If your dishwasher wont drain, there are seven lucky things you can do before calling an expert. First, check the air gap of the sink, near the faucet, and unclog it if necessary. Unscrew the top cap and rinse it well. Second, check the drain hose leading from the air gap to the garbage disposal. Clean it out and reattach it. Third, if your dishwasher uses a belt to drive the pump, and the pump doesnt seem to be working, try replacing the drive belt. It may be broken or stretched out. Fourth, for models that have both a wash impeller and a drain impeller, the drain impeller might be broken, either at the shaft or at the blades. Replace the broken parts of the drain impeller. Fifth, some dishwashers use a drain solenoid to drain the water. This might be stuck. Try loosening it by hand. If that doesnt work, replace the pump assembly. Sixth, perhaps the motor is stuck. Try getting the motor going by spinning it by hand. If that doesnt work, replace the motor. Finally, if the wash timer is busted, youll have to replace it.

If you follow these basic tips, youll have a good, solid start in becoming a dishwasher repair expert on your own.

Is the TV Repair Business Still Profitable?

The television, also known as the "telly" or the "boob tube", is probably the most ubiquitous and cheapest source of entertainment and continues to serve its purpose satisfactorily ever since it first became commercially available in the 1930's. The TV is here to stay and the question on whether your TV repair skills can remain a decent source of income may be answered by sheer numbers. The latest statistics I have found was from a year 2005 Wall Street Journal report that estimated the number of TV sets worldwide at around 1 to 2 billion. That's a lot of televisions out there considering that was more than 3 years ago!

I would venture to guess that any TV repair business would still be profitable business if it knows how to get a slice of the pie that the major manufacturers' service centers are getting by offering superior service at a lot more affordable prices.

You should also learn to adapt to the modern times and be open to learning new skills by investing a little bit of your time and resources to learning new things.

Recent trends indicate that the usual cathode ray tube (CRT) TV may be on the way out and that more and more growth is seen in the newer technologies of TV. New statistics indicate that the liquid crystal display (LCD) and the plasma flat screen TV are well on their way to impressive growth! This is true even with the current worldwide financial crisis (circa 2008-2009) that originated from the US housing credit bubble burst. Now, everyone is starting to scrimp on unessential stuff like expensive vacations but has started buying new TVs for their recreational needs at home.

The decline of demand for the traditional CRTs means there will also be a decline of prices and profitability in that area. People buying CRT televisions are seeing it more and more as disposables and would rather buy new ones instead of having malfunctioning ones repaired.

On the other hand, the increase in the demand for the newer LCD and Plasma screen TVs could mean there will also be a flood of pre-owned units in the market that thrift-buyers definitely still prefer. This is seen especially in developing countries where most people still could not afford the relatively pricier newer technologies and second-hand TV stores are still thriving.

At any rate, I think the business of TV repair remains a viable and profitable venture for anyone who's interested so long as he or she is willing to actively identify the areas of opportunities and adapt to current market conditions.

Hence, the acquisition of new technical skills is a pre-requisite to staying competitive and on top of the business of electronics repair. This should not be as difficult as it sounds as there are now more ways you can learn, for example, LCD TV repair or plasma TV repair, without getting formal TV repair training in a classroom setting. There are now online membership sites that offer detailed step-by-step tutorials at really low fees that you could earn back in one repair job of one television unit! You can get TV repair tips online and study at your own pace but at the speed of the internet! I know that seems like an oxymoron but I think that's a pretty fair description of the convenience the internet offers to anyone looking to learn new things.

There is definitely going to be a surge in demand for services relating to the huge number of flat screen televisions out there in people's homes. Catch the wave before it happens and make your TV repair business grow.

The author is an advocate of using the internet for learning new technical skills for the benefit of your business. He is also a proponent of Do-It-Yourself TV Repair and maintains a website about LCD and Plasma TV Repair.

It's Not Easy Being a Green Home

Green building and green homes are terms that get bandied about pretty liberally these days. Quite often, what passes for green makes strides in one area while backtracking in another. If we're really keen on going green these days, we'll need to look beyond labels to find out if what we're buying will truly benefit the environment. Read on for a run-down of the four biggest magnets for the "green home" label and some of the noxious realities that lurk within:

Recycled Materials

Recycled building products may be considered green because they conserve resources, raw materials and turn post consumer or industrial waste into a valuable and useable resource. These benefits can be nullified however if producing the recycled product requires an undue amount of energy consumption, creates pollution or if the final product leeches toxins into the environment. Rubber tiles for instance put old tires to good use giving them green kudos but when used in an enclosed environment they'll leak unhealthy chemicals into the air that are decidedly not green.

Conservation of Natural Resources

Building products that use less material than their predecessors, are rapidly renewable or have a high durability factor make the green list because they conserve natural resources. But like recycled products, products that conserve resources may also have qualities or histories that are notoriously not green. For example MDF board can be made from almost any quality wood including sawmill off-cuts and uses almost 100% of the wood in the final product. The result is that an MDF board makes more complete use of natural resources than a natural wood board. But if it has been pressed with urea formaldehyde, as it typically is, it will off-gas and working with it can make you sick. MDF also has a shorter lifespan and less water resistance than natural wood products which means it will need to be replaced sooner and require the use of even more resources.

Clean Air

Natural materials that don't pollute the environment or leech toxins are legendary for getting green points and keeping it clean. Wood, stone, slate, marble and plant products, for example, don't require long chains of chemical processing or release cancerous fumes into the lived environment. Natural, minimally processed materials are simply healthier to live with and therefore green. These benefits are eliminated, however, if harvesting, extracting or transporting the materials creates pollution, requires a huge amount of resources or depletes a resource faster than it can be renewed.

Energy Efficiency

Products that affect energy consumption and water use on a day to day basis stand to effect the biggest environmental impact of all materials that go into a home. Those who wish to be truly green will make sure that operating their home requires minimum amounts of energy and water. Properly insulated walls, windows and doors minimize the amount of energy required to heat and cool a building and therefore have a favorable impact on the environment and are fortunately fairly easy to attain. But how will you generate heat and power? Unfortunately, most of us will have to opt for some sort of fossil fuel or electric power limiting our "green" energy options to those that focus on using as few resources as possible rather than renewable resources like solar power and wind power that don't need to be mined or transported and create no pollution.

Clearly, it's not easy being green. Though making strides toward reducing our impact on the environment by building and buying green homes is clearly one of the best places to start, it's important to educate ourselves if we want to do it right. Green isn't just something we buy, it's a careful balance between conservation, low pollution and sustainability.

Plastic Surgery Repair of the Torn Earlobe

The wearing of ear jewelry has been done for thousands of years to enhance one's appearance. Rings, posts, and other objects have been used for ear ornaments and they are as popular today as they have ever been in history. While various parts of the ear are pierced, the earlobe is the most universal site. Unfortunately the earlobe has no structural support because it contains no cartilage unlike the rest of the ear. As a result, the weight of large ear rings or trauma can pull them through the earlobe, leaving a tear or notch in the otherwise smooth continuous edge of the earlobe. The split earlobe not only causes an obvious cosmetic deformity which is hard to cover but also makes it difficult to continue to wear any ear jewelry.

Repair of the split earlobe is a common procedure that is easily done in the office at a low cost. In some cases, the ear lobe hole is merely enlarged (and almost torn through) but most cases have a complete tear creating an inverted V look. Depending on the earlobe problem, reconstruction can take different forms. In every method used, however, the skin lining the hole or tear is removed creating fresh new skin edges from to rebuild.

There are numerous minor variations to earlobe repairs, all with the intent of leaving the earlobe with a smooth and non-notched outer skin border. Whether it be a straight-line closure, z-plasty, rim w-plasty, or jelly-roll technique, they all can work successfully if done well. Over the years, I have found that the straight-line closure will work in most cases. The fear of a notched earlobe rim has not been borne out in my experience. The key is to do a complete resection of all skin edges of the tear so that a tension-free closure can be done.

After an earlobe repair, there are some small sutures that I will need to remove in a week. There are no dressings or special care that needs to be done after. One can shower and get the ear wet as normal. There is virtually no pain after and only a very mild amount of swelling.

Repair of the torn or split earlobe is a simple plastic surgery procedure that works well. One should not avoid having it done for fear that it is a big involved ordeal....for it is not.

Dr Barry Eppley is a board-certified plastic surgeon in private practice in Indianapolis, Indiana at Clarian Health Systems. (http://www.eppleyplasticsurgery.com) He writes a daily blog on plastic surgery, spa therapies, and medical skin care at http://www.exploreplasticsurgery.com

The Art of Buying Bathroom Sinks Online

Before you purchase your bathroom sink, there are a few things you should know. Will your bathroom have a vanity on which the sink will be mounted? Or, do you want a pedestal sink or simply a wall mounted sink with nothing hoisting it up?

If you need an above the counter sink for a vanity, you will need to know the dimensions of your vanity so that you can decide how big or small of a sink you can put on top. You will also need to know what type of sink you are looking for. If you need some help figuring out which type of sink you need, you can hire a contractor or a plumber to assist you. Another important thing you need to know about buying a sink is that the plumbing equipment usually does not come with the sink. The plumbing supplies, including the p-trap, drain, and stop valves, have to be bought separately. You also have to make sure you have enough in your budget to accommodate these both the sink and the plumbing supplies. A sink without plumbing equipment will be of no use to you.

After you gather all this information, the fun part begins. You can pick the shape you want, and there are many shapes to choose from: square sinks, oval sinks, round sinks, asymmetrical sinks, pedestal sinks, and more. You can also match your sink color with the theme of your entire bathroom. There are also many options for colors: white, black, pink floral, grey floral, platinum, Pergamon, and so forth. If you are truly looking for luxury, you can choose a ceramic sink with marble. Once you have picked out everything you want, you will need to find it online.

In order to find what you want online, you will have to do a search. If you just type bathroom sink you will find many sinks, but very few will match what you are looking for. You will need to know the size, color, and price of the sink in order to narrow your search down.

A great website to do such a search on is: TotalBath All you have to do is go to the bathroom sinks page and you can search by price, size, finish, and so forth. They have great discounts and offer free shipping as well.

What Is A Mortgage Contingency Clause In A Real Estate Contract

A mortgage contingency clause is a provision in the home purchase contract that stipulated that if the prospective buyer can not get a mortgage within a fixed period of time, this prospective buyer will be able call the whole deal off. In other words, the agreement is conditional on the buyer being able to obtain a mortgage on the property.

Be careful when dealing with contingency clause. Any real estate officer or loan officer will tell you that there is no universal "standard" mortgage contingency clause. The seller would prefer that the sale close no matter how high the interest rate and how awful the terms the mortgage carries for the buyer. But the buyer wants to be sure that if he cannot get the mortgage he is counting on, such as one with 90% financing on a 30-year loan, the mortgage at no more than a specific rate, he can stop the transaction and recover the down payment. Both the buyer and the seller need to get some security about the deal to happen. The seller may be too concerned that the buyer is leaving the transaction too uncertain. Therefore these provisions are often negotiated.

General contingency clauses are very often to a contract. You can find appraisal clause stipulating that the sale is conditional to a certain amount of the value of the house. House inspection clause stating contingencies that deal with the presence of insect and other toxic substances or with the tests to verify that a septic system or well is functioning properly. You will find thousands of contingencies clause. Everything comes down to your ability to bargain and deal with the seller. But the hardest to bargain is the mortgage contingency clause on the ground that it affects directly your financial commitment.
